English Goldendoodles are often loved for their low-shedding coats, but not all Goldendoodles are completely non-shedding. How much they shed can depend on their generation, genetics, and furnishings. Some Goldendoodles inherit more of the Poodle’s low-shedding coat, while others may shed more like a Golden Retriever. Understanding coat types and generations can help families choose a Goldendoodle that best fits their lifestyle, especially when shedding or allergies are a concern.
For families looking for a low- to non-shedding Goldendoodle, generation can make a difference, although no breeder can guarantee that a dog will be completely non-shedding or hypoallergenic.
F1 Goldendoodle – 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle. Coats can vary significantly, and some F1 Goldendoodles may shed.
F1B Goldendoodle – Typically 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle. Often a good choice for families wanting a lower-shedding coat because of the higher Poodle influence.
F1BB Goldendoodle – Typically 12.5% Golden Retriever and 87.5% Poodle. Generally has an even greater likelihood of a very low-shedding coat.
Multigenerational Goldendoodle – Produced from later-generation Goldendoodles. When parents are carefully selected for coat genetics, breeders can produce consistent low-shedding coats while maintaining Goldendoodle traits.
